Ratingen. The way that bathrooms are designed has a major influence on the overall image of a hotel and has become a crucial factor for the hotel industry. The Dolce Munich conference hotel in Unterschleissheim near Munich, which opened in April 2010, is an example of how creative planning and professional realisation of ideas can lead to the best results.
The builder and operator of this hotel is the US-based Dolce Group, which has managed the neighbouring multipurpose arena since 2007 and is currently undertaking a global expansion programme. The four-star superior hotel cost a total of 50 million euros to construct and has over 225 elegantly furnished superior and deluxe rooms, 25 junior and presidential suites, two restaurants and a bar with a beer garden and terrace, as well as the spacious Vital Spa.
The Hamburg architects at JOI-Design were responsible for the interior design of the hotel, which is characterised primarily by its exclusivity, style and individuality. The interior is a successful combination of Bavarian comfort and contemporary lifestyle. Typical regional materials, such as leather, loden and animal hides are combined with a reduced mix of materials made from native, natural woods, bronzed metal and smoothed, exposed concrete. All rooms and suites are furnished in warm, earthy tones. Light wool carpets form an attractive contrast to the dark, bog-oak floors. This contrast between light and dark surfaces is continued in the bathrooms of the guest rooms, which lends them an aesthetically appealing atmosphere.
With the bathroom furnishings, the builder and interior designers placed great importance on high-quality brand products and high technical standards, as well as design, comfort and durability. They decided on system solutions from the German brand manufacturers Keramag and Koralle. This included countertop washbasins from the Renova Nr. 1 Plan range with vanity units including an integrated hand-towel rail. The trendy square design contrasts with softly rounded external contours. The clever layout of the bathrooms around the service shafts creates two niches, where the designers have integrated showers that are level with the floor, complete with real-glass shower screens (Koralle S707) and WCs from the Renova Nr. 1 range.
For the sanitary facilities in the restaurant and conference areas, the designers installed urinals from the Flow by Hadi Teherani range in addition to the WCs listed above. The urinals appear to grow organically out of the wall. The modern urinal flush system Flushcontrol 500 N (Keramag) ensures the highest standards of hygiene and comfort with reduced water consumption of just one litre per flush.
The interior designer responsible for this project, Wiebke Biß (JOI-Design) had the following to say about this concept: ‘The design of the living areas is continued in the guest bathrooms and sanitary facilities.’ The hotel was booked almost to capacity shortly after opening, which is a sign that the philosophy ‘Create room and experiences’ coined by Andy Dolce, the owner of Dolce Hotels and Resorts, has also been received well in Bavaria.
